JAMES ISLAND ALSo KNOWN AS KUNTA KINTEH ISLAND
The island is an important historical and an UNESCO World Heritage site. This place is particularly important because of it’s testimony of slavery as a gathering place for slaves until slavery was abolished. James island is also known as Kunta Kinteh Island. Kunta Kinteh, a rebel slave and famous character from the novel and television series Roots, stayed on the island before he was shipped to America. Because of the erosion the island is now six times smaller than it was in 1760 and the government is fighting to save the foundation.
A jeep will take you to Juffureh passing by beautiful local villages. At Juffureh we take a fishing boat to James Island. On the island you can see the cells and chains where the slaves were held captive and follow into the footsteps of Kunta Kinteh. You will learn more about the Gambian slave history from very authentic stories. We visit the Museum of slavery and you get to see the real actual slave ship. We visit the Children’s centre and you also have the opportunity to meet up with the Kunta Kinteh family.
