GEORGETOWN (JANJANBUReh),
BABOON ISLAND & STONE CIRCLES

This two-day trip is a must for everybody who wants to experience the real Gambia. Georgetown is the country’s old capital and lays in the Central River Region of the Gambia.
The tour begins from the hotel where we pick you up by car and go with the ferry from Banjul to Barra. After a 2,5 hour drive we arrive at Georgetown where we first have lunch.
After lunch we go by walk to the town and visit the Slave House, Old Schools, the famous Freedom Tree and one of the oldest churches in Africa the Methodist Church. The town is busy and colorful especially on ‘Lumo’ market days.
After 1 hour we take a car which will take us in 25 minutes to Kuntaur where we drop our luggage at the lodge where we stay the night. Here we take a boat and cruise for 4 hours on the Gambia river through the national park. If we are lucky we get to see the Hippos, crocodiles, baboons and many bird species. We will pass the baboon island which has a chimpanzee rehabilitation project and where we can spot chimp families in their natural habitat. There are now over 100 chimpanzees living on 3 different baboon islands.
After this impressive cruise, the boat drops us off at the African village where we stay the night and where dinner is waiting for us.
There is no electricity at the lodge, so with candlelights and fires we watch a demonstration of traditional dancing.
You will sleep in a traditional round house which is having own toilet and shower.
The next morning after having breakfast at the riverside we drive by car to Wassu village where the magnificent stone circles are. The stones are believed to be burial grounds for past kings and their belongings and this UNESCO World Heritage site is considered sacred.
From there we will start our return journey.
It will be a stunning experience that you won’t forget!

 >> Yearly in January a unique cultural festival takes place in Janjanbureh called The Janjanbureh Kankurang masquerade festival.  The Kankurang, a masquerade tradition is associated with the rites of passage into ”manhood” and is practiced by Mandinka communities. This initiation is a way of graduating the youth to full membership of their communities by learning the importance of community living.

You are welcome to experience this unique cultural expression tradition of Gambia. In 2024 the festival takes place from 26 january till 28 january. A must visit if you are in Gambia! <<
